It's been a year ago today we lost a true mandolin icon and a dear friend to all that knew him. I learned a lot from Dempsey, probably more about being a person than a mandolin player, although he was great at both! He was always so outgoing to everybody regardless of what that had to offer him, just because he was a great guy. God Bless Dempsey Young and his Family!

Dempsey has been on my mind all week. Tonight, if this weather doesn't take a turn for the worse, we'll be seeing Lost And Found in concert for the first time since before Dempsey's passing. It should be an evening filled with fond memories for sure.

Hey Alan, I have thought about him all this week as well.
He impacted all of us with that Hutto of his.

Me and him picked all night at Sertoma one year when I was with King. And he always had this S&%T eating Grin on his face like he was up to something....
He was one funny person..
Did you ever hear him play guitar?
He had a unique style on guitar that was out of this world great!

Yeah I miss him!

I did get to hear him play guitar, Joe. He could could pull the mean tone out of any instrument. A lot of it was in his hands instead of the instrument. I've been checking his DVD this past week. What a cool guy!

Thanks for commemorating Dempsey, Alan.

His was a unique voice in bluegrass mandolin. I first became aware of him in 1979 or so. I saw that green record in a Tenafly, NJ record store and saw four guys in leisure suits - had to buy it! In the ensuing years, I sought out everything he was on - from the early L&F records, to his video, to the Gene Parker solo record, to live shows. Highlights for me were picking with him at a party, hanging on the bus with him and having him play my mandolin on stage at a Willow Oak set one time. I will miss him forever.

Thanks for posting that photo, Alan! What a thrill that must have been!

The show I was going to see a few weeks ago was cancelled but we will be seeing Lost and Found this Saturday (1/5). I can't wait...

It was a thrill, Lowell. He kept pointing at me, and then at the mandolin. He didn't want to give it back after!

His breaks were full of taste and tone. And his chordal work just complimented the songs so well.

How was the L&F show you saw? I hear Scott Napier is on mandolin now.

I'd like to hear Lowell's opinion also but we heard them back in the summer with Scott and really did a great job I thought. That being said, we'll always miss Dempsey! Good to hear from you Alan!

I don't think anybody could fill Dempsey's shoes but I believe Scott was the best choice to fill the spot. Scott is very talented and it helps that he grew up listening and learning from Dempsey via the bands albums. Scott did a great job the other night and the crowd as a whole was imressed and enthusiastic. The band sounded great as well and I look forward to seeing them again soon! Here's a photo I shot of Scott...

Dempsey was the man! What he left out was just as important as what he put in. Nice photo of Scott there, Lowell. I love it when the right hand is a blur <g>! My my, how the child has grown into a man, and he picks on a Hutto, no less.

Hey Alan, am enjoying the GT CD in my car for many months now. I think I almost have that GrassTowne Fling down (ahem...with thanks to the awesome tab of it on this very cool site). Good luck, buddy, and hope to see you soon.

p.s. that photo with Dempsey was from Willow Oak, taken by his widow.

I miss Dempsey also.He was so kind to me as a kid and new Mandolin player. He brought me on the bus, taught me a few licks, and let me play on the Hutto. He was very humble about his abilities.Through the years I would see him from time to time and he never changed. He always had time for his fans.I also got to meet another great mandolin player who taught me some licks, and let me play his Loar down in Louisiana a few years ago.He too always seems to have time for people.I'm sure some of Dempsey probably rubbed off on you Alan.

I sure appreciate that Dennis! That's about a nice of a compliment as I could ever get. I definitely saw at a very young age how good Dempsey was with people and I also saw some players that weren't so good and it REALLY left an impression on me to ALWAYS be kind to folks. It really should be easy to do because most fans are so nice! Thanks again Dennis and I hope to see you again soon!

Just a note here to say that I read that the L&F are releasing a new recording very soon, and it will contain Dempsey's last recordings with the band. Sure to be great (and bittersweet).
